grandpa of my heart
Grandpa of My Heart
You married sweet Grandma
The year God wished me into this world
My mother whispered "Grandpa" into my ear
And moving my small body around
It was your eyes that caught mine
No smile upon your mouth,
Still, the message from your eyes
Spilled warmth into every corner
Of my heart and put one on mine.
You became the Grandpa of my heart
:chorus:
The strength of love was in your hugs
The wisdom of experience in your words
I can't remember the day it all began
But, yet, I always knew that I loved you
You are the Grandpa of my heart
I remember the day we shook our confused little heads
At your request for old garden hose
You pushed it into the tires of our beat-up bikes
And ever since the prickles have been beat
If I'd forgotten the pack 'o' cards
You'd pull one out of your deep pocket
Out of a draw, too, would appear
A bag of your freshly dried apricots
You were the Grandpa of my heart
The strength of love was in your hugs
The wisdom of experience in your words
I can't remember the day it all began
But, yet, I always knew that I loved you
You are the Grandpa of my heart
Dad tells me that before you left
You'd longed to throw a line in for fish again
And that Grandma had said she'd catch you some
Ready for when you were signed out
Well, I've never caught a fish in my life
But when I reel in my first one--I'll think of you
For you, dearist Papa Doug, will always be
The Grandpa of my heart

description
- Papa Doug wasn't actually my biological grandfather. My real grandfather I never knew;
someone I can't wait to meet in Heaven. In the meantime, it was Papa Doug who was the
grandpa of my heart. My only regret is that I didn't write this the day before he died, instead
of the day after--so that he might have read it.
